Admin Tech Training

In about a week I will be giving a 3hr workshop to school administrators at the ITSC conference in Portland. The focus of my workshop is how to use technology to work smarter rather than harder. At this time I am focusing my efforts on just a few tools and concepts because I want them to actually do things rather than listen to me talk and demonstrate. Here is some of what I've thought about highlighting:

  • creating an online PLN
  • using Google forms and documents
  • RSS - setting up your own start page
  • a tour of some tools to improve productivity - ie - wikis, Jott, Evernote
  • demonstration of the usefulness of my iPhone
My dilemma is that I only have three hours so I can't get too in depth with one specific tool. But I also don't want to go too fast. I have a good outline of how I envision the workshop progressing but any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

This is going to sound really terrible but you will find that you will not get through very much. Make sure they leave with something "set up" a google account, a twitter account, a blog, but just something. When i did this same thing last year for admin the feedback that I got was that they wanted something set up that they could go back and use right then. I hope that makes sense. I will be doing the same type of thing in March so PLEASE blog about your reflections, input from participants, etc. Just like teachers, admin are on many different levels too.

I'm a principal in Northeast Wisconsin planning to teach on similar topics to my admin team. We'll have to compare notes.

Hi Skip,

Let the admin leave with something when they walk away. Show them some of examples on how administrators are blogging both professionally and as a means of communications with parents. (I'm biased but use www.sentimentsoncommonsense.com and teachers.saschina.org/mspudong). Have them start a wordpress or edublog during the session and then have a wiki page with a bunch of screencasts to help them through the process!

Enjoy the conference. Connect with Jeff Utecht... he's crashing at our place in Hillsboro during the conference.
